In Meerut, 40k challans issued, money for only 762 recovered

Meerut: In a shocking revelation, the traffic department has claimed that it is yet to hear on execution of close to 40,000 challans which were sent to police after offenders were caught on camera violating traffic rules. Based on the report of SP (traffic), a probe has been ordered into the matter.Sources said that it is likely that local cops could have encashed the challans instead of redirecting them to the traffic department. We have an idea about what might have happened, but will wait for the inquiry report to be tabled,” a traffic department sleuth, who did not wish to be named, said. Meanwhile, the traffic department said that the issue of photo challan backlog, which makes a hole in the state exchequer, has been taken up with senior officials of police department. “The issue was raised during crime meetings in the past but it didn’t draw officials’ attention.

Fine is then collected by the traffic department,” SP (traffic) Sanjeev Vajpayee said.The department claims that between August 2016 and March 2018, 39,358 challan orders were sent to 31 police stations in the district, but the local police acted in only 762 cases.
