Meerut: The district, on Sunday, got its first generic medicine centre – Jan Aushadhi Kendra - at the PL Sharma district hospital here. The centre was inaugurated by Meerut MP Rajendra Agarwal and chief medical officer (CMO) Dr Raj Kumar Chaudhary. Launched under the central government’s Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana Kendra (PMBJPK) campaign, these medicine stores aim to provide quality drugs at affordable prices. The costs of medicines are cut by at least 90%.“Around 30 districts in Uttar Pradesh are set to get Jan Aushadhi centres. Locals can purchase medicines from these stores irrespective of whether they are prescribed by a government or private doctor,” said Dr PK Bansal, superintendent-in-chief, PL Sharma district hospital.Launched by the department of pharmaceuticals, these centres are being set up across India to provide medicines that are affordable but do not differ in quality from branded (or expensive) drugs.“We will closely monitor these centres and make sure that the quality of medicines is not compromised in any way. We will also make sure that enough stock of medicines is kept in the centre at all times,” said CMO Chaudhary.
