Cane farmers demonstrate at mill over dues, hold folk dances

Farmers also intend to lock the main gate of the mill.

All this, even as the police remained deployed outside the mill.While the farmers demanded that their pending sugarcane dues be paid along with interest as they were not cleared within a 14-day period and that the cases filed against them by the mill be withdrawn, they said that the dancers were called for “entertainment”. Triveni mill in Khatauli of Muzaffarnagar is facing a huge farmers’ protest for the last 12 days, supported by Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and other parties.Abhishek Chaudhry, state spokesperson of RLD said, “The pending dues are not the only issue. We want this paid.”Rajeev Kumar, deputy superintendent of police of Khatauli said, “The sugar mill management has made a complaint about the demonstration being held in the premises, which is private property. Farmers also intend to lock the main gate of the mill. There are families of employees who live in the premises.”By the time this report was filed, heavy police force was present in the area and the demonstration was continuing.
