They crawl.On Monday, they crawled their way to the office of the senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Meerut in tears and threatened to end their lives after all their hard-earned money was allegedly stolen. They said that local police "treat everyone equally", and that like others they were also chased away from the police station when they went to register a case of theft.Pushed to the brink, the couple decided to take the matter to the SSP “one last time”. They also threatened to end their lives if a case was not registered and the money, Rs 80,000, not recovered. “It was all we had,” Kumar said.Under the scorching summer sun, the sight of two full-grown adults dragging themselves to cover a tiny distance froze everyone in the premises of the SSP's office. The thief decamped with valuables and Rs 80,000 from their house in Kanshiram colony on Hapur road.“Based on our suspicion, we had named a woman, Shimla. Later, her husband Lakshman started harassing us for complaining to police,” Kumar said.Kumar also claimed that police did not file a case on their complaint, and also threatened them.“Our penury and medical condition did not melt the hearts of the policemen. We will end our lives if we don’t get help,” Kumar said.After a nudge from the SSP's office, local police slipped into action. Rajendra Tyagi, SHO of Kharkhauda said, “The victims have claimed that they were turned away from the police station. I apologise for that. I have asked him to draft a fresh complaint following which FIR will be lodged.”
