Meerut: In a surprise move, Meerut College, a 126-year-old college affiliated to Chaudhary Charan Singh University, has issued an order barring students from wearing “revealing” clothes. In fact, students cover their face with a dupatta to protect themselves from the heat and not to hide their identity,” said a student of Meerut College who did not wish to be identified. There are approximately 10,000 students enrolled at the college and all are expected to comply with the diktat.Giving details about the decision, Meerut College principal Abha Chandra, said, “In a recent meeting conducted with the proctor board and the anti-ragging board, it has been decided that girls will not be allowed to wear revealing clothes and the boys will not be allowed in shorts on college campus. But once within the college premises, they must remove their dupattas as it makes it difficult for us to identify students, especially now. “Students often cover their faces with dupattas to protect themselves from the sun.

This will ensure discipline and prevent harassment of women students.”Asked to explain what ‘revealing clothes’ meant, Chandra said clothes with deep neck and low-waist fall under this bracket. Not just this, students who cover their face with a dupatta in order to protect themselves from the sun will not be allowed to do so. “Students often cover their faces with dupattas to protect themselves from the sun. This can be done up to the parking lot. But once within the college premises, they must remove their dupattas as it makes it difficult for us to identify students, especially now. Admissions for first-year students is still on and not all students have identity cards, so it is mandatory that they do not roam about on the campus with their faces covered,” said Chandra. The instructions to the effect will be pasted on notice boards on campus. The students have strongly opposed the college orders. “This is a very unfair decision that college authorities have come up with. We have the right to wear whatever we want to, how can we be restricted in the terms of attire? In fact, students cover their face with a dupatta to protect themselves from the heat and not to hide their identity,” said a student of Meerut College who did not wish to be identified.
