Delhi-bound bus catches fire, drive-conductor duo risk lives to evacuate 30 passengers

Muzaffarnagar: Over 30 passengers of a New Delhi-bound UP roadways bus had a narrow escape when the vehicle got engulfed in fire in Muzaffarnagar district. Without giving a slight thought to their safety, driver and conductor of the bus maneuvered through the vehicle, opened the emergency door and broke window panes to evacuate the passengers. Passengers also helped each other.”A passenger, Harman Preet, who was going to Ghaziabad for a job interview, said: “They did a good job. But I am happy because all my passengers were safe,” the driver said.Bus conductor Anil Chauhan said, “The incident took place at 8 am. Their eyebrows were also wiped out.The bus was going from Rishikesh to New Delhi when the blaze erupted on Monday morning.BP Agrawal, assistant regional manager (ARM) of Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) in Muzaffarnagar, said, “A probe is on into the matter. The driver and the conductor have done a good job and they will be awarded. All the passengers were safe and they have been sent to their homes after the incident.”Bus driver Sandeep Kumar, 42, spotted smoke billowing out of the vehicle New Mandi area of Muzaffarnagar. “I stopped the bus immediately and rushed to open the door. Conductor Mohit Chauhan also stared taking out the passengers from the burning bus. It all happened within a minute,” said driver Kumar.“We also opened the emergency exit and helped people to evacuate the bus,” he added.In the process, the duo sustained burn injuries and are recuperating.“Our hairs and eyebrows got burnt in the process. But I am happy because all my passengers were safe,” the driver said.Bus conductor Anil Chauhan said, “The incident took place at 8 am. We broke windows panes to evacuate the passengers. There were children also. Passengers also helped each other.”A passenger, Harman Preet, who was going to Ghaziabad for a job interview, said: “They did a good job. But my some of my certificates were burnt.” Later, a fire tender rushed to spot and extinguished the fire.
