498 murders in Meerut zone in eight months of 2018, 39,000 criminal offences reported

Meerut: In the first eight months of this year, a total of 498 cases of murder have been reported in Meerut zone compromising nine districts. A total of 568 murders were reported from January1-August 31 in 2016. “Unlike in the past, there is no organised crime in the region. The number has dropped to 498 this year.So far, in more than 800 encounters, 1673 criminal have been arrested, while 38 others have been gunned down, by police teams. 570 such cases were reported during the same period in 2017.

Meerut: In the first eight months of this year, a total of 498 cases of murder have been reported in Meerut zone compromising nine districts. According to the official data, during this period, 39,038 criminal offences under IPC have been registered, surpassing the 2016 tally of 32,347 and 2017 tally of 35,137 during the same period.While the number of heinous crimes like murder and rape has dropped, there is a cumulative increases in the total crime reported in the region. “Unlike in the past, there is no organised crime in the region. All dreaded gangsters are behind bars. Majority of serious crimes are result of personal enmity,” Meerut ADG Prashant Kumar said.Top officials, while crediting police crackdown in the form of encounters, claimed that heinous crimes have come down in the region due to this tough approach. A total of 568 murders were reported from January1-August 31 in 2016. 570 such cases were reported during the same period in 2017. The number has dropped to 498 this year.So far, in more than 800 encounters, 1673 criminal have been arrested, while 38 others have been gunned down, by police teams. A total of 374 criminals have sustained bullet injuries in these incidents.UP DGP OP Singh had recently patted his department’s back by claiming that the crime graph in the state had come down drastically. “While dacoity has come down by 36.96%, loot has reduced by 19%, murder by1%, burglary by 12.84%, riots by 6.94%, kidnapping for ransom by 8.7% and rape by 6.91%,” The DGP had recently said while quoting official date from January to July this year.
