Meerut: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of doubling the farmers’ income by 2022 is a challenge, UP governor Ram Naik said on Thursday. Naik, who was addressing students at the 11th convocation ceremony of Meerut’s Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel University, said that mere contemplation by agriculture scientists won’t help and that “all of us will have to sit together and think over it”.“We should think about where we are currently in the farming sector and where we want to go. We have to focus on new researches in farming and fully utilize the resources that we have at hand,” the governor said.“Going by UP’s population, only three countries in the world — China, America and Indonesia — are more populous than UP. If UP was not a state, it would have been the fourth most populated country in the world. Hence, the state has the maximum responsibility of contributing in the country’s development. It is due to the efforts of our farmers and scientists that we are in a situation that we can export wheat. We should understand that if the farmers are given the right guidance, they can rise high,” Naik said. The governor also stressed on the need for students to devise new technologies for farmers.“Shortcuts in life hamper success. Failures are bound to come, but it is important not to lose heart. Failures give us a chance to improve and become successful,” he said.Talking about the law and order situation in UP, Naik said, “If I were to give marks to the law and order situation of UP, I would have given 50 points 17 months ago. But today, I will give it 80 points. The government and the concerned officials should work towards further improving the law and order situation,” Naik said.
