UP encounter death toll at 64 since March 2017

They had abducted traders Hafiz Usman and Arshad in the last week of August. Two criminals, a sub-inspector and a constable of the Uttar Pradesh Police suffered gunshot injuries in the encounter. So far in Meerut zone, 1,673 criminals have been arrested and 40 have been gunned down by police in more than 800 encounters.

Meerut: In a dramatic rescue operation in Saharanpur's Sorana village on Saturday night, police claimed to have freed two traders who were abducted by criminals after a gunfight. Two criminals, a sub-inspector and a constable of the Uttar Pradesh Police suffered gunshot injuries in the encounter. The two criminals later succumbed to bullet injuries in Saharanpur district hospital on Sunday morning, police said.With the latest killings, the death toll in encounters in UP has gone up to 64 since March 2017. So far in Meerut zone, 1,673 criminals have been arrested and 40 have been gunned down by police in more than 800 encounters. A total of 374 criminals have suffered bullet injuries in these encounters.Giving details of the Saharanpur case, police said Ompal Saini and Vicky had abducted Umesh and Tulsi (the last three go by their first name only) on Saturday. The two dead criminals were residents of Thanabhawan in Shamli and operated in Shamli and Saharanpur districts. The two traders are residents of Saharanpur and deal with construction material.Police claimed Ompal and Vicky were involved in several cases of extortion, loot and murder. Going by police records, Ompal was wanted in 33 cases of loot, murder and extortion while Vicky was involved in 18-odd criminal cases in Saharanpur and Shamli.If the police are to be believed, the duo were also involved in the sensational killing of a school principal, Subash Rana, in August. "They had abducted Rana on August 2 and demanded a ransom of Rs 2 lakh from his family. Rana was found murdered later in the night," said Saharanpur SSP Upendra Agarwal.Police said the two were also involved in another case of abduction and murder. They had abducted traders Hafiz Usman and Arshad in the last week of August. Hafiz was later found dead on August 28, police said.The local police, it seems, are unfazed by the mounting pressure from the Supreme Court and human right organisations taking cognizance of UP police department's trigger-happy cops who are on an encounter-spree. Prashant Kumar, additional director general ( ADG), Meerut zone, said, "Crackdown on criminals is being carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the honourable Supreme Court and the National Human Rights Commission. There is no fake encounter. Rogue police officers or those misusing power have been dealt with an iron fist."
