Meerut: In an attempt to instill good driving etiquettes, Meerut traffic police is planning to install ‘tyre-killers’ on some busy stretches to puncture the tyres of vehicles driven on the wrong side. After the initiative kicks in, Meerut will become the first city in UP and the second in the entire country to have ‘tyre-killers’.‘Tyre-killers’ are a metal strip which acts as a speed breaker for vehicles driven in the right direction, while its spikes puncture the tyre of vehicles coming from the wrong side.According to officials, the traffic police has taken a quotation for the project under which installation of ‘tyre-killers’ on a one-metre stretch would cost Rs 45,000. The procurement process will be started next month. Officials said that before the installation, they will ensure that commuters are made aware about spike barriers.“Seeing how wrong side driving leads to traffic congestion in different parts of Meerut, we have decided to get spike barriers,” said Meerut SP (traffic) Sanjeev Bajpai. Asked about the safety concerns regarding ‘tyre-killers’, the SP said, “We will put up sign boards and spread awareness among commuters before we install these barriers.”While a quotation has been sought from a particular company, the authorities are currently comparing prices offered by different dealers along with time of supply. “We are in the process of finalizing the project and ‘tyre-killers’ will reach us by next month. We are planning to get barriers for 15 metres so that they can be used at two or three different places,” said Bajpai. The traffic police has identified areas like Mandi Wala Gate and PL Sharma road where jams are witnessed almost every day primarily due to wrong side driving. So far this initiative has been introduced only in Pune. “We welcome the traffic police’s decision as it will provide great relief to scores of daily commuters like me,” said Puneet Sharma, a resident of PL Sharma road.
