'Honour' killing? Mumbai CAG staff murdered in Muzaffarnagar, 4 brothers-in-law booked

Muzaffarnagar: An staff of Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), Mumbai was on Thursday found murdered and buried inside a sugarcane field on the outskirts of UP’s Muzaffarnagar, a day after his wife filed an abduction case against her four brothers suspecting their role in the disappearance of her husband.Manoj Sharma, 29, and Sonia, now 26, got married three years ago, notwithstanding the objection from their families which were against their ties as they belonged to different castes.According to police, Manoj and Sonia met around four years ago during coaching classes in Muzaffarnagar. Later, they moved to Mumbai in search of jobs and got married there. Soon, Manoj was selected to work as data entry operator at the CAG office in Mumbai, while Sonia also cleared a state government exam and was appointed as Lekhpal (book keeper) in UP’s Shamli’s district.After much persuasion, Manoj decided to visit his in-laws’ house in Kuthba village of Muzaffarnagar. He reached the village on Tuesday. The next day, when Manoj wanted to leave for his parental home in Gangnauli village of neighbouring Baghpat district, Sonia’s brothers also accompanied him.However, according to police sources, Manoj did not reach his home till Wednesday night. And, Sonia’s brothers too did not return.Sensing something fishy, Sonia left for her in-laws’ home in Baghpat and got an FIR registered against her four brothers.Her worst fears came true when, after a prolonged search, local police found Manoj’s body buried inside a sugarcane field near Kuthba village.Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sudhir Kumar told TOI: “An FIR of Manoj’s kidnapping was registered on Wednesday. During a search drive, his body was recovered from a sugarcane field. We have arrested one of the accused while raids are on to nab the other three brothers.”According to sources, Manoj was transferred to CAG office in Delhi and wanted to join the new office after visiting his in-laws’ house.This comes even as the brutal murder of a Dalit youth in Nalgonda district of Telangana has sent shock waves across the country. The youth was allegedly killed by goons hired by the father of the girl he had married.
