We have not found any evidence that the cracker was deliberately placed in her mouth. The accused, Harpal Singh , had lit a cracker but it did not go off and it lay there for some time.

MEERUT: In a tragic incident, a 3-year-old girl suffered severe injuries after a firecracker went off in her mouth during Diwali celebrations at Milakpur village in Sardhana block of Meerut on Thursday. The child was rushed to a local hospital where the doctor had to put nearly 30 stitches to keep her battered jaws together. The doctor treating her said she was recuperating but still in a critical condition.An FIR was registered after family members of the girl lodged a complaint alleging that their 42-year-old neighbour had lured the child away and stuffed a cracker in her mouth before lighting it, said police. “My child was playing outside our house when the incident occurred. She was immediately rushed to the nearby hospital where doctors had to put 30 stitches to hold her battered mouth together," said the girl’s father, Shashi Pal.Police, however, said on Friday that it was an accident. Prashant Kapil, incharge of Sardhana police station, told TOI, “Preliminary inquiry reveals that it was an accident. The accused, Harpal Singh , had lit a cracker but it did not go off and it lay there for some time. The girl went near and started blowing it to reignite the fuse when the firecracker went off all of a sudden. We have not found any evidence that the cracker was deliberately placed in her mouth. Since the girl's family members have made the allegation, we have registered an FIR against Harpal Singh.”"The girl's father and Harpal Kumar are involved in a property dispute and the former might be using the incident to settle scores,” said the incharge of Sardhana police station."An FIR under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 452 (house trespass after preparation to hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) has been lodged against accused Harpal Singh. He is yet to be arrested,” said Kapil.Dr Sunil Tyagi, who is treating the child, said, “The girl has suffered severe injuries in her mouth. There is considerable damage to the tongue as well. We have conducted surgery and she is gradually recuperating.”
