Meerut: Police, on Saturday, conducted a raid at a godown owned by the local liquor mafia Ramesh Pradhan in Mangatpura area and recovered over 500 cartons of illicit liquor.During the raid, the police team was confronted by Pradhan and his aides who opened fire at the policemen catching the latter by surprise. The team immediately called for reinforcements following which a posse of policemen led by SP (city) Ranvijay Singh arrived at the spot.However, Pradhan managed an escape. The local police have intensified its hunt for Pradhan, who is infamous for his illicit liquor business in Meerut. He runs through slum dwellers in the Mangatpura locality."More than 500 cartons of illicit liquor have been recovered from the godown. This is one of the many seizures we have made in the locality. The area has grown notorious for illicit liquor business run by Pradhan as it is aided by several of the local slum dwellers," SP Singh said."In recent past, Pradhan and his aides had attacked a team of local excise department which was raiding a premise in the locality to seize illicit liquor," SP (city) said.The local police have filed an FIR against Pradhan and several unknown accused on the charges of attempt to murder (section 307 of the IPC) for attacking the police team.
