2 assailants, who shot at homeguard, held

Meerut: Two assailants — Taufiq and Rafeeq — who had allegedly opened fire at a police homeguard on October 20, were apprehended by the Bulandshahr police following an encounter near Dhameda Nara village in Kotwali Dehat area on Sunday late night.The duo sustained bullet injures in the encounter. Thakur was wanted in a sensational robbery at the residence of a PWD official earlier this year. According to the police, both Taufeeq and Rafiq are residents of Firozabad and are seasoned criminals. A bike looted from Noida, two country-made pistols and several cartridges were recovered from them. The two have been named in in several cases of theft, loot and armed robberies.The duo had reportedly opened fire at homeguard Badlaoo Singh near Bulanshahr's Jainpur trisection on October 20 last month after the latter signalled their pick-up van to stop at a check post.

Homeguard Singh had sustained severe bullet injuries and a case of attempt to murder was lodged against the duo.In yet another encounter in Meerut, a robber Akash Thakur, who carries a Rs 25,000 bounty on his head, was arrested in an encounter with Meerut's Partapur police and crime branch. Thakur was wanted in a sensational robbery at the residence of a PWD official earlier this year.
