Petition says lawyers observing strike on Saturdays for 34 years, HC seeks details

Nainital: The Uttarakhand high court on Thursday sought details of all the strikes called by lawyers of lower courts of Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts this year while hearing a petition which alleged that the lawyers in these courts never worked on Saturdays in the last 34 years, affecting the judicial work.The direction was given to the district judge of Dehradun by a division bench of chief justice Ramesh Ranganathan and justice Alok Singh.The details have to be submitted before the high court within next six weeks.The direction came on a petition filed by a Dehradun resident who alleged that the bar association was observing strike on every Saturday for the past 34 years.BS Adhikari, counsel for the petitioner said: “The court has sought an explanation regarding strike of lawyers on every Saturday since last 34 years.”The petition said that before the formation of Uttarakhand, the lawyers had been observing strike on Saturdays for years to press for their demand for a bench of Allahabad high court in Dehradun.“But, even after Uttarakhand was formed, the lawyers continued to observe Saturday as an unofficial holiday,” he said.
