Man killed in mob attack; kin blame cops

MEERUT: A 40-year-old epilepsy patient , who was mercilessly beaten by a mob which mistook him for a cattle thief, died on Sunday afternoon in UP's Bulandshahr with his family alleging that he was not taken to hospital by local police, but, was instead kept in custody for the entire night which led to his death. Police have denied the charges.Chhote Mohan was beaten with lathis on late Saturday night by a group of men when he lost way and asked for directions in Bulandshahr's Faizpura village . Mistaking him for cattle thief, people attacked him with lathis, leaving him seriously injured.But, instead of taking Mohan to a hospital, policemen of Anupshahr station area took Mohan into custody. "The injured man was kept in custody for the entire Sunday night," said Dungar Singh, a relative who later filed an FIR.Police informed the family the next morning, Singh said, adding that Mohan was taken to hospital but he was declared "brought dead" by doctors. "Mohan had gone to attend a religious function in Anupshahr. While returning, he strayed into Faizpur village where he was assaulted," Singh said."My cousin would have been alive had he been given treatment on time. Police knew he was beaten up and yet they kept him in custody for entire night without feeling the need to take him to hospital. After Mohan's death, his relatives put his body on the road and blocked traffic outside the police station.Akhilesh Gaur, station officer of Anupshahr police station, however, refuted charges and said, "Chhote Mohan was a patient of epilepsy and had strayed into Faizpur in the early hours of Sunday where he was thrashed as locals believed he was a cattle thief.He had gone to an adjacent village to attend a night-long religious function on Saturday night. We had only brought him to police station and immediately informed his family members who took him to hospital where he died. It is wrong that we had kept him for whole night."
