On several occasions we have caught hold of repeat offenders who secure bail in a month or two and slip back in the ‘old business’,” an official from Meerut crime branch said. However, SSP Meena maintains that most of them would be accounted at the end of the 14-day-long drive.“The drive has begun on November 14, and more than 300 such accused have been traced. The local police have been asked to maintain strict monitoring,” the SSP said.Among those who are out on bail include hardened criminal who have been accused of loot, robbery and murder.“There is always a threat when a hardened criminal is out on bail. Meerut: With crime incidents rising in parts of western Uttar Pradesh, the Meerut police have launched a 14-day drive to trace and monitor the activities of more than 2,700 criminals who got out on bail in the last 10 months.According to senior superintendent of police (SSP) Meena, the dive is aimed to keep a check on these criminals as they might “slip back into their job once they are out on bail.”“Idea is to keep monitoring their activities and make the presence of police is felt, which helps in deterring them from indulging in criminal activities,” SSP Meena said. However, sources claim that the drive was launched after a rap from the top officials over spike in crime in west UP with Meerut being its epicentre.Another police official, on condition of anonymity, claimed that most of these criminals are unaccounted for, which has started to worry the department.
