Man beaten with shoes in kangaroo court over minor dispute

Muzaffarnagar: A local panchayat in Muzaffarnagar's Joli village, under Bhopa police station, ordered a man to be hit five times with shoes in punishment for a dispute over money. The diktat was carried out and Israr Ahmad, 22, having been humiliated publicly, went home. However, there was more in store for him. In the evening, several men, who believed his punishment hadn’t been enough, barged into his home and beat him up brutally. Police took cognizance of the matter and filed an FIR.The incident had taken place on Sunday, after which the victim was admitted to the district hospital. Ahmed’s condition is said to be out of danger now. Talking to TOI, Ahmed said, “I had had a minor argument with Afzal, Hannan, Saleem, Tazeen and some others. Their supporters called a panchayat in the village, which made me apologise and had me beaten five times with shoes. Later, they all came to my home and beat me up brutally.”After receiving the complaint, police registered a case against the accused. Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Bhopa, Ram Mohan Sharma said, “I have no clue about the panchayat but as we were informed about the brawl, we have registered a case against all the accused under various sections, including 307 (Attempt to murder) of the IPC. We are conducting raids to nab the culprits, who are absconding,” said the DSP.Shah Raza Naqvi, husband of the village chief, said, “I was not in the village at the time of the incident. As far as I know, Ahmed is a poor man who runs a sweet shop in a village. He was brutally beaten up after being humiliated in a so-called panchayat in the village.”
