Meerut: In a video that has now gone viral on social media, a woman is seen being publicly assaulted by shopkeepers in Lal Kurti market. The local police slipped into action only after the video of the incident surfaced on social media.The incident happened in busy market area of Lalkurti on Wednesday evening. In the video, the victim, alleged to be a shop-lifter, can be seen surrounded by men heckling, pushing and man-handling her while scores of onlookers stood and watched.A case was registered at Lalkurti police station on Thursday after a local NGO submitted a written complaint at the police station naming unidentified people for allegedly thrashing the woman.According to police, the woman was caught stealing from a garment shop in LalKurti area.“People were trying to corner the woman who was caught stealing from a shop and tried to flee from after she was caught red-handed. However, based on the complaint, an FIR under section 323 of the Indian Penal Code was lodged and two people, Honey and Jeetendra, were arrested and sent to jail. Efforts are on to trace others,” a police officer said.
