According to government estimates, the district has over 44,000 malnourished children while around 12,000 others are malnourished. Usually, state governments in parts of the country give chickens and goats to poor families to help them fight malnutrition. According to experts and those familiar with chicken breeding, the chicks are vulnerable to diseases and most of them die early.District manager of the scheme, Shailesh Kumar Yadav, said: "The scheme has been clubbed with UP Rural Livelihood Mission here. It is aimed at providing jobs to Dalit women. Besides, it will reduce malnutrition in poor families. They can consume eggs of the hens to get nutrition and sell eggs and flesh of the hens ."Yadav further said: "The government is providing Rs 425 to each woman to develop infrastructure to rear hens. In the first phase, 200 women have been given chicks. They have also been trained to rear and look after these hens."Chief veterinary officer Bhupendra Singh said: "Aro-und 4 to 5 months old hens start laying eggs and 2 months old hens can be used for flesh."
