Hooch tragedy: SIT formed, 2 kingpins held

Meerut/Lucknow/Doon: A five-member special investigating team (SIT) headed by an ADG was formed in Uttar Pradesh on Monday to probe the hooch tragedy that killed over hundred people in UP and Uttarakhand last week. Opposition members then stormed the well of the House and started raising slogans, while marshals cordoned off the chair of speaker Hriday Narain Dikshit, who asked them to calm down.In Uttarakhand, assembly opened on a stormy note on Monday with the Congress lawmakers entering the well of the House demanding the resignation of the excise minister and dismissal of the state government. Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat also said an SIT will probe the incident.As two DSPs – one each in Saharanpur and Kushinagar – were suspended, police on Monday claimed to have arrested the two main accused who are said to have supplied the spurious liquor to hundreds of people in the region.According to police, Sardar Hardev Singh and his father Sukhbinder Sukkha, two local liquor mafia who were identified as the kingpins, used to manufacture and distribute hooch in Saharanpur.Meanwhile, assembly proceedings in both the states were disrupted as opposition blamed the two state governments for the hooch tragedy and staged walkout.In UP, the opposition disrupted the question hour in assembly on Monday and demanded chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s resignation.
