After 2 swine flu deaths, health dept asks docs to take precautionary steps

“We are conducting fever health camps and people with category C symptoms are being sent for testing for swine flu. We have been conducting regular awareness drives and active case surveillance to test people who have suspected symptoms of swine flu. Meerut: After two swine flu deaths were reported on Monday, Meerut health department issued a fresh advisory, asking medical practitioners to ensure that such a patient visit their clinics only after taking a prior appointment. “If a person tests positive for swine flu at a private lab, his/her second sample should be sent to the microbiology laboratory at Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College,” said Dr Kumar. Also, their waiting time should be minimal so that other patients do not contract the infection.

Not just this, they have also been instructed to mention the category of the patient on the prescription.So far, 179 cases have been reported in Meerut district, the highest in the state.“As many as eight patients tested positive for swine flu in Meerut on Tuesday, making the total number of cases in Meerut 179. We have been conducting regular awareness drives and active case surveillance to test people who have suspected symptoms of swine flu. People are advised to maintain cleanliness to prevent spread of the infection,” said Dr Raj Kumar, Meerut chief medical officer.It should be noted that one Suman (25) of Bhawanpur, who was four months pregnant, and Vineet Kaushal (48) of Kankerkhera died of swine flu in Meerut on Monday. They were the first two victims of the disease in the district this year. “We are conducting fever health camps and people with category C symptoms are being sent for testing for swine flu. Special care is being taken that medication is started in the cases tested positive for the disease,” said Dr Raj Kumar.According to the new advisory, medical practitioners have been asked to take special care of high risk group patients, which include children, the elderly and pregnant women. “If a person tests positive for swine flu at a private lab, his/her second sample should be sent to the microbiology laboratory at Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College,” said Dr Kumar.
