Gujjars stage 'symbolic rail roko andolan' in Meerut

MEERUT: Around 200 agitators sat on the railway track demanding job reservation for Gujjar community at Sakoti Tanda railway station on the outskirts of Meerut on Tuesday.The 'rail roko andolan' was more of a symbolic act triggered by a Facebook post of a local SP leader Atul Pradhan who had appealed people to stop trains with an aim to press demand for job quota for the community.However, heavy police force was deployed at the station to deal with any untoward incident. Samajwadi Party city Ranvijay Singh said, "No train was stopped but heavy police force had been deployed at the station. We later received their memorandum addressed to the president of India seeking job quota."Speaking to TOI, Pradhan said, "Our intention is not to disturb anyone or take law into our hands. Our message is clear. Dozens of members of our community had given their lives in different parts of the country while demanding reservation. We have assembled here to show solidarity to our brethren in Rajasthan . However, we may take an aggressive route if government doesn't listen to our demands."There were reports that a train was stopped on Meerut city railway station but neither the railway staff nor police confirmed the development.The Tuesday's demonstration was direct fallout of Gujjar quota stir, which has entered its 5th day throwing life out of gear.On Tuesday, three trains were cancelled and two were diverted in Rajasthan. The community demands 5% reservation in jobs.
