Meerut struggles to quell swine flu as toll rises to three

Also, epidemiological study and travel history of patients is being checked, health department authorities said.

Meerut: Swine flu continues to spread in Meerut with the number of deaths reaching three on Thursday even as the number of cases rose to 192 on Thursday.Despite health department’s awareness drives to maintain cleanliness and advisory to take immediate medication if one has cough or cold, the number of patients testing positive for swine flu continues to rise. Till date, Meerut has the highest number of patients testing positive for H1N1 virus in Uttar Pradesh.On its part, the health department has issued an advisory for all schools in the district to not conduct morning assemblies and send a student home in case he or she has symptoms of swine flu. The schools have been instructed to see that they play a major role in spreading awareness about the disease.“As many as three deaths have been reported due to swine flu in Meerut so far. Also, eight new cases were reported on Thursday, making the total number of cases here 192. We are continuously conducting awareness drives in different parts of the city, however, despite this, the number of cases of swine flu continue to increase,” said Dr Raj Kumar, Meerut chief medical officer.In a fresh advisory issued by Dr Kumar, the schools in the district have been instructed to not hold morning assemblies as this air-borne viral infection can easily spread among children if one of them is infected in the form of droplets when one so much as sneezes. Schools have also been asked to spread awareness about the disease in classroom sessions.Active case finding through surveillance is being done in the areas where swine flu patients reside. Awareness camps are also being set up so that people in those areas can exercise caution. Also, epidemiological study and travel history of patients is being checked, health department authorities said.
