Give ‘martyr’ status to slain paramilitary jawans: RLD

Meerut: Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) vice president Jayant Chaudhary on Tuesday sought “martyr” status for jawans of para military forces who get killed in action. Our paramilitary forces are constantly engaging in anti-insurgency and anti-Naxal operations within the country. Nevertheless, there has been custom in the Army to accord martyr status to the soldiers.In July 2018, there was a shift in government’s stand on this issue when it informed the Delhi high court that the paramilitary personnel who sacrifice their lives in the line of duty may be accorded ‘martyr’ status and the proposal was under ‘active consideration.’ The demand came against the death of 44 personnel of CRPF in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Thursday.“Era of conventional battles is over. Deaths in such cases should also be considered as battle casualty.

Our paramilitary forces are constantly engaging in anti-insurgency and anti-Naxal operations within the country. Deaths in such cases should also be considered as battle casualty. Like Army, our paramilitary forces are also making supreme sacrifices and they should be given the credit at least,” he said.In an affidavit submitted in Delhi high court in response to a petition filed in 2015, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) had said that the term martyr was not used in the three services and “no such order/notification had been issued by the MoD.”A year later, the Union home ministry told Lok Sabha that martyr was not used for any casualties in the Indian Armed Forces.
