Bijnor: Security personnel at DM office in UP’s Bijnor are busy dealing with a different kind of security threat due to which no candidate has dared to file nomination paper so far. On Tuesday, six of them were injured, one of them seriously while trying to deal with it. They are honeybees. On Monday, some officials tried to “smoke them out”. They lit heaps of garbage, expecting that the bees will flee. Instead, the officials were seen fleeing the area moments later, as they were chased and stung by a swarm of irate honeybees. Then on Tuesday morning, a clutch of policemen tried to clear a beehive strategically built at the entry gate of the collectorate. They also met the same fate, even worse. Six of them were badly stung by the bees, and one had to be rushed to a hospital in serious condition. Sub inspector Anuj Singh was stung badly. Another police constable, who gathered courage to cover Singh’s body with a blanket, was also stung. Policemen deployed to secure the DM office premises were seen running for the own safety.According to locals, the bees are wreaking havoc on those coming to the DM office for the last few days. When contacted, superintendent of police (rural) Vishvajeet Srivastava confirmed that some police personnel have been stung by bees on Monday and Tuesday as well. “We are trying our best to remove the beehive from the venue.”Rupesh Kumar, a Bijnor resident, said, “It is lapse in security that police did not pay attention to such a big beehive, which is on a tree just outside DM office. If police did not remove it on time, it will create hurdle in way of candidates who will come here to file nomination papers.”February, March and April are the breeding season for the bees as flowers are in abundance and they have plenty of food to feed their larva. When they sense any danger, they attack the intruders. On March 9, honeybees let loose a reign of terror in Sambhal additional superintendent of police (ASP) office premises, leaving at least six persons seriously injured. The incident came a day after a 55-year-old farmer died in a similar attack about 30 km away in Moradabad’s Thakurdwara area.In a similar attack on March 9, two farmers -- Nathu Singh, 60 and Raja Ram, 55 -- were attacked by a swarm of bees in Farakpur village in Moradabad’s Thakurdwara area. They were cutting sugarcane and had disturbed a beehive, leading to the attack. Both the farmers ran for cover, but couldn’t outpace the bees and were attacked by them.Farmers, working in nearby fields, took them to hospital where Raja Ram succumbed to injuries inflicted by bees a day later. Nathu’s condition is said as stable.
