MUZAFFARNAGAR: BJP MP Sanjeev Balyan’s political trajectory has seen it all. From being a veterinary doctor to one of the youngest ministers in Narendra Modi government in just three years, Balyan’s rise has been meteoric. In the corridors of power, one of the major reasons for this impressive political growth is attributed to his alleged role in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots. Balyan had thought to have incited people, triggering communal riots in the district.Gradually over time though, Balyan lost the initial zeal and with that his ministerial berths. So, ahead of the release of the BJP’s first list of candidates, local leaders were not sure about his passing the test. However, Balyan was back with renewed vigour on Thursday. His party has entrusted him with a new challenge this time, a daunting one. Balyan is the official candidate from the saffron party to take on the might of veteran Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Ajit Singh.Eighty-year-old Singh is the SP-BSP-RLD alliance candidate fighting probably his “last election” and heavily banking on the consolidation of Muslim votes along with the formidable Jat community. There is apprehension that with the riot accused Balyan in the poll fray now, the high voltage contest is all set to have ‘polarized’ overtures. In an exclusive interaction with TOI, Balyan acknowledged, “The challenge is going to be tough this time.” Balyan, however, said that “development” would be his main poll plank. “You will see a different picture in Muzaffarnagar this time. I’ve stayed with the people for five years. And I would be seeking votes based on PM Modi’s development work. My opposition candidates are seeking votes on religion. This time, I have much to say about the development work that I have done in my constituency while the opposition has nothing to offer,” he said.On the SP-BSP-RLD alliance, Balyan said that the entire opposition was blaming Samajwadi Party (SP) for the Muzaffarnagar riots and now all of a sudden there is a change of heart. “The very [political] parties which held SP responsible for the communal flare-up are, nowadays, sharing the same dais. In this election, people will vote for us. We have a strong PM face. Do they [alliance] have any?” Balyan added. In fact, Balyan put it straight, “This is a ‘gathbandhan of convenience’ with no vision, no credibility and no policy. It is like a wedding procession without any groom!”
