But Siddiqui was also named in several graft cases, including the alleged memorial scam during the BSP regime. Siddiqui is now pitted against BSP’s Malook Nagar and BJP’s sitting MP Bhartendra Singh.

A former BSP heavyweight and confidant-turned-foe of Mayawati, Siddiqui had joined Congress last year after being ousted from the party. Siddiqui is now pitted against BSP’s Malook Nagar and BJP’s sitting MP Bhartendra Singh. Congress had earlier fielded Indira Bhati as its candidate from Bijnor, but replaced her with Siddiqui.Soon after the announcement, Siddiqui said his fight was against BJP only.There are over 5 lakh Muslim voters in Bijnor parliamentary seat, which is divided into five assembly segments of three districts—Bijnor, Muzaffarnagar and Meerut.Among the five assembly segments, Chandpur and Bijnor segments are in Bijnor district. Purkazi and Meerapur fall in Muzaffarnagar while Hastinapur assembly segment lies in Meerut district. Siddiqui later told TOI that he will use his “vast network and experience” to help Congress win elections.“I have a vast political network in UP, and I am familiar with each district of UP. I never asked for ticket. It is the decision of our party to field me from Bijnor seat. I have accepted the offer. I have studied in Meerut and have also worked there. I am not a new comer. I will win this seat for my party. I am sure people of all segments will support me, irrespective of their caste and religion,” Siddiqui said.Siddiqui had long been associated with the BSP, and was considered close to party chief Mayawati. From an MLA, he rose to power and became a Cabinet minister. However, he fell out with Mayawati and it led to his ouster from the party. Later, Siddiqui alleged that the BSP supremo took money for tickets. But Siddiqui was also named in several graft cases, including the alleged memorial scam during the BSP regime. He had joined Congress in February last year.
