MEERUT: Local BJP cadre are upset over central party’s leadership move to drop Mriganka Singh as its candidate from Kairana Lok Sabha constituency. A day after party announced its decision to field Gangoh MLA Pradeep Chaudhary as its official candidate for the Kairana constituency, local unit workers staged a protest and held a panchayat demanding that late MP Hukum Singh's daughter should contest as an Independent from the seat.Soon after the announcement, a large number of supporters of Mriganka assembled at her residence and voiced their protest against the decision. A composed Mriganka who seemed visibly disturbed by the development said, “I have been on the field for the past 10 months and have been preparing for the poll all this while. Supporters’ anger is justified but then I am a disciplined soldier of the party and will continue to work for it.”Asked whether fielding an outsider would have any impact on election results, Mriganka said, “Only time will tell.”By Sunday morning, banners in support of late Hukum Singh's daughter cropped up on main bazaars, stating “Na koi shak, na koi shanka, Kairana se bas behen Mriganka. Kairana mein Bhajapa se koi aur bardaasht nai (No doubt and no uncertainty, only Mriganka from Kairana. No one else from BJP will be tolerated)”.A supporter, Farman Ali. said, “Let us predict, BJP has lost the winning seat here by allowing an outsider to contest. This is an insult to all the hard work put in by local cadre and late Babu Hukum Singh.”A panchayat was also held on Sunday in which an 11-member committee gave a day's ultimatum to BJP central leadership to reconsider its decision “or else Mriganka Singh will fight as an Independent candidate”.Jitender Nirwal, a close associate of Hukum Singh, said, “Babu Hukum Singh had worked hard for rebuilding BJP in the state and today, the same party is ignoring the well-being of his family. Mriganka’s r axing is a part of well thought-out strategy. This is the time we have to show our strength. Either she should be given a ticket or we will launch her as an Independent candidate.”
