As candidates with supporters arrived in their large vehicles to file their nomination papers at the collectorate’s office on Monday, they were in for a ‘humpy’ surprise.SP Singh, an Independent candidate from Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut-Hapur Lok Sabha (LS) constituency, stole the limelight by arriving on a ‘colourful’ camel. A resident of Shastri Nagar, Singh wants to be the voice of the poor, particularly Dalits, and endeavours to fight for their rights. “I want my voice to reach the corridors of power in Delhi,” Singh said.On his unique ‘humpy’ ride to the venue, Singh explained, “Camel is the ship of the desert. They are one of the most fascinating of all desert-adapted animals. They can live in harsh weather conditions and work very hard for their food. I came on a camel because it is a symbol of difficult life and I wanted to show how poor people work and struggle in their daily lives.”“I demand that loans of people living in poverty, labourers and technicians should be waived off. Also, a scheme of Rs 2 lakh should be provided to each one of them and detailed accounts should be maintained to keep an eye on where the money is going,” the 58-year-old candidate added.Dressed in a white kurta-dhoti, Singh also wore a colourful, traditional Rajasthani pagdi. The people around were impressed by Singh’s act and the latter proudly waved from the saddle. The camel was decorated with colourful tassels. The Independent candidate received a warm welcome as he went into the collectorate’s office to file his nomination papers.Explaining why he chose a camel to the nomination venue, Singh said, “It is about perspective and creating a narrative. I don’t want big cars to be used for the poll campaign. In fact, I think that we should walk on foot and meet people in their villages. This would not only help us to interact with the people, but also save fuel and prevent pollution.”Singh further said, “Camel is a faithful animal. They are also used by our security forces to patrol the international border in Rajasthan. They can travel to places where large tanks cannot. Camels are faithful to their master while I’m faithful to my people.”
