Police detain lawyers who were set to protest at PM's rally in Meerut

MEERUT: West UP lawyers who were set to protest at PM Modi’s rally for their pending demand of High Court bench here were stopped from going to the venue and detained by police on Thursday morning. The lawyers who had placards of ‘We want HC bench’ were stalled from going to the venue. After a dramatic stand-off between the lawyers and the police, the lawyers were let off only after Modi 's rally got over. We will utilise the opportunity of the elections and continue our protest for other rallies too,” said Sharma.The lawyers from Western UP had planned to protest at PM Modi’s rally venue to put forward their long pending demand of a HC bench in West UP. The lawyers showed 'disappointment' over not being able to protest in a democratic countryDevki Nandan Sharma, convenor, central action committee for HC bench, said, “We live in a democratic country and even then we were not allowed to peacefully protest at PM Modi’s rally.

If we have certain demands, where are we supposed to go with them, if we cannot even go to our leaders?”The lawyers who had gathered at Kutchery road at 10am, moved further to PL Sharma road after removing police barriers and reached Begampul – from where they were not allowed to go to the rally spot. They were detained at 11am and left only at 1:30pm – the time by which PM Modi had already left the city.“Though we did not get the chance to protest at the rally venue, but this doesn’t mean that our demands will not find a way to reach the higher ups. We will utilise the opportunity of the elections and continue our protest for other rallies too,” said Sharma.The lawyers from Western UP had planned to protest at PM Modi’s rally venue to put forward their long pending demand of a HC bench in West UP.
