Bijnor: Two days after an eight-year-old was raped, a youth, 19, was arrested for the crime just as he was about to leave Bijnor’s Jalalabad town under Najibabad police station. The accused was identified by means of the CCTV footage.Najibabad station house officer Sanjay Panchal told reporters on Friday, “Police have arrested the alleged culprit with the help of a CCTV footage. He was arrested from Najibabad railway station when he was about to leave town. He has confessed to his crime.” The accused, the SHO said, runs a hardware shop in the market. He told police that he lured the girl inside his shop and raped her there. When her condition deteriorated, he dropped her on the roadside after shutting his shop and fleeing, Panchal added. The survivor reached home weeping and narrated her ordeal to her parents.Police had then filed a case against unidentified accused under IPC section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 376 (rape) and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, based on the complaint by victim’s brother. The girl’s medical examination was also carried out.Police zeroed in on the accused on the basis of a CCTV footage, showing the youth with the girl. They showed the youth’s photo to the girl who identified him.The culprit was identified as Mahmood of Pram Nagar mohalla in Jalalabad.
