LLRM Medical College accidently interchanged the bodies of two COVID patients, while the relatives of one cremated the body without removing the PPE; it was the other family who identified the error moments before the cremation.

A slip-up while attaching the identity tags led to the interchange of bodies of two elderly persons who died at COVID-19 ward of Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College Meerut. Senior officials confronted that the fallacy happened as the sweeper attaching the tags was intoxicated.

Two patients Guruvacahan (65) a resident of Meerut was admitted on Tuseday with breathing problem and died on Friday night. The same night Yashpal (58) a resident of Ghaziabad’s Modinagar also succumbed to disease, both were admitted to hospital on September 3rd and 4th respectively. According to Dr. Gyanendra Kumar ‘’both their attendees were rushing the handover process and in a hurry bodies got exchanged. This is the matter of negligence on the part of hospital administration and we have constituted committee to look into the matter’’.

Dr. Lokesh war in-charge stated ‘’both bodies were wrapped in PPE before being handed over to the families. The sweeper under the influence of liquor messed it up’’. Rajendra Dubey, Secretary, Medical Education has sought a report from DM Anil Dhingra. The DM has asked district’s Chief Medical Officer Rajkumar Saini and ADM Ajay Kumar Tiwari to probe the incident and the two officials confronted that the intoxicated sweepers caused the error.

The incident came into light when before the cremation; the kin of Guruvacahan (65) wanted to see his body for one last time, after opening the cover the fallacy was revealed. Guruvachan nephew Vikas Sharma stated ‘’for one last look we removed the cover and we were shocked. When we contacted the LLRM Medical College, instead of accepting their fault, the officials started shouting at us for unpacking the body’’.

The family of diseased Yashpal (58) whose body was swapped with latter was also in state of shock as they performed the last riots of someone else stating that “I got a call on Sunday that my father’s body is yet to be cremated and we have performed the last riots of someone else’’. Later on Sunday the body of Yashpal was handed to the Modinagar family while in return the Meerut family received urn of ashes.
