First phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2017 begins amid tight security. Polling is taking place across 15 districts on 73 Constituencies. Peoiple in Meerut are casting their mandates.

First phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2017 begins amid tight security. Polling is taking place across 15 districts on 73 Constituencies. Since early morning voters were seen reaching to their respective polling stations to cast their mandates. Meerut is constituency No. 48 of Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly. According to Election Commission of India data, Meerut constituency has 2,78,845 registered voters. It comprises 1,52,617 male and 1,26,209 female registered voters.  In the 2012 Assembly elections, the BJP defeated the Samajwadi Party by a margin of 6,278 votes to win this constituency. Laxmikant Bajpai, the winning BJP candidate, got 68,154 votes. Rafeeq Ansari of Samajwadi Party, the nearest contender, got 61,876 votes. The voter turnout was 64.26 %.
