The cane productivity is 440 quintals per hectare. We were told that Bijnor in UP has a high sugar recovery at 12%. We were keen to know the technology and methods adopted by the farmers here,” said Kishan, one of the delegation members and the head of Kalyanpur village in Nepal. The team from across the border was led by SP Mishra, an officer at Himalayan Sugar and Chemical Industry in Nepal’s Sirha district. “We saw several sugarcane fields on Saturday. We are here on a tree-day visit,” added Kishan.Officials said Bijnor’s sugar yield is highest in the country and that in the normal course, not more than 10% of sugar is extracted from cane crop. Earlier, teams from Brazil, Indonesia, Vietnam, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Australia and China visited the district to see sugarcane farming here.District cane officer OP Singh said he was contacted by a team from Nepal which arrived on Saturday. “They were impressed to see trench and single bud methods of growing sugarcane. Farmers from the group said they would try the same in Nepal. This will help them in cutting down their water consumption and use of fertilizers and pesticides. Through trench method, peasants here have been able to achieve sugarcane productivity of 800 quintals per hectare. We have been sowing all varieties of sugarcane and over 80% of the cultivation area in the district is dedicated to the crop,” he said.“Our experience here will help us in increasing the sugarcane productivity in Nepal. We will be visiting more fields in the next two days and will be learning more about the trench method,” SP Mishra said.
