Bijnor: A mob blocked the Delhi-Pauri national highway in Bijnor on Friday morning after a 40-year-old farmer was mowed down by a speeding truck. Locals demanded the arrest of the driver who had fled after running over the farmer. The blockage caused a huge traffic jam on the highway.According to police, Yashpal Singh, a resident of Timarpur villager , which is near the city, had gone to inspect his fields around 5am and was on his way home when the accident happened. When he reached near a petrol pump on the highway, a speeding truck crushed him. The unidentified truck driver who apparently lost control of the vehicle also smashed several electric poles in the process. But he managed to flee from the spot.As news of the farmer’s death spread, a large number of villagers gathered at the spot and created a ruckus. They blocked Delhi-Pauri highway for one and a half hours. Enraged villagers demanded that the family of the deceased be compensated and the truck driver be arrested.To control the situation, SDM, Bijnor, Satendra Kumar and, SHO, Premveer Rana, reached spot and tried to mollify the mob. They assured the agitators that their demands would be met. After this, villagers dispersed.According to SHO Rana, “A case has been registered against unidentified truck driver. Police are trying to trace the accused.”
