Traffic drive: Cops issue 462 challans for speeding, driving without seatbelts

Meerut: In a drive by traffic police here on Wednesday, 454 people were issued challans for driving without seatbelts, while 8 were given challans for speeding. This includes 8,109 deaths due to reckless driving, making it a huge 34% of the total number of deaths. The drive came in the aftermath of instructions given by UP DGP Sulkhan Singh to keep a tab on locals who do not follow traffic rules.Superintendent of police (traffic) Sanjeev Bajpai said, “A drive against people speeding or driving without seatbelts was conducted on Wednesday. In fact, on Monday, too, a drive was conducted against people without driving licences and minors at the wheel or on bikes.”It should be noted that while time and again traffic drives are conducted in the city, residents do not follow the rules till they are enforced strictly by the police.Din Dayal Dixit, traffic sub-inspector, said, “Fines totalling Rs 27,900 were imposed on the drivers and we hope that they do not repeat the traffic rule violations, since it is for their own good and safety.”According to National Crime Records Bureau, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of deaths due to road accidents in 2015, at 23,219.
