Meerut: In a shocking revelation after an inspection by the divisional midday meal coordinator here, students of Nanakchand Anglo Sanskrit (NAS) Inter College in Meerut were found to not have received meals for the last three years. It was found that MDM was not served in NAS Inter College for the last three years. Similarly, only 140 students out of 497 were being given MDMs in Shanta Smarak Inter College. This was despite the fact that Rs 4.13 and Rs 6.18 are earmarked for MDM in primary and upper primary schools respectively. Meerut: In a shocking revelation after an inspection by the divisional midday meal coordinator here, students of Nanakchand Anglo Sanskrit (NAS) Inter College in Meerut were found to not have received meals for the last three years. The NGO given the responsibility had only started distributing biscuits to students from August 28. Inspections at two other inter colleges also found that very few of the students enrolled there had been given MDMs. A report has been submitted by the MDM authorities to the basic shiksha adhikari as well as the district inspector of schools (DIOS), officials said.“Inspection was carried out in NAS Inter College, RG Inter College and Shanta Smarak Inter College on September 6 and September 12 this year. It was found that MDM was not served in NAS Inter College for the last three years. The NGO responsible had started distributing only biscuits worth Rs 2 to each child starting August 28. This was despite the fact that Rs 4.13 and Rs 6.18 are earmarked for MDM in primary and upper primary schools respectively. This amount includes 150ml milk and 100 gm grain every Wednesday and also a fruit for Rs 4 each on every Monday for primary school students, and 200ml milk and 150 gm grains on Wednesday and also a fruit for Rs 4 each on every Monday for upper primary school students,” read the report issued by Ashok Kumar Singh, divisional assistant education director (basic). The report – a copy of which is with TOI – further mentions out of 108 children in RG Inter College, only 90 were getting MDMs. Similarly, only 140 students out of 497 were being given MDMs in Shanta Smarak Inter College. “Milk was not being served in these two schools. Also, teachers at both schools said that the chapatis being served were of low quality,” read Singh’s report. The authorities also found that the schools did not maintain MDM registers, despite being given registers to maintain data. Also, teachers were unaware of the menu and the contact numbers of MDM officials were not painted in the school premises, leading to coordination problems.“At NAS Inter College an insect was found in the meal some three years ago, after which the NGO was told not to supply food and the situation remained so for three years. It went unnoticed because inspections were not conducted by the district task force every three months, as they were supposed to,” said divisional MDM coordinator Virendra Kumar. The report has been sent to the officials concerned for further action.
