Meerut: In a case of a daring bank robbery that has left police perplexed, miscreants dug up a 15 feet long tunnel from a drain on Delhi road to enter a United Bank of India branch in the area early on Wednesday. Surprisingly, the robbers only took away hard discs of five computers along with the recording device of CCTV cameras installed in the bank. Officials said that there were four-five people involved in the crime and they also broke into the strong room, but could not open the cash chest.Brahmpuri circle officer Akhilesh Bhadauria said, “Right now, we are kind of clueless. It’s not clear how they managed to dig up the tunnel and get inside the bank. Surprisingly, the entire bank was spot free. So if they had indeed gotten inside the drain, how come there weren’t traces of dirt and silt? The entire operation was carried out quite neatly. We are investigating the case and a dog squad and forensic teams have already been pressed into service.”Meanwhile, the bank employees were equally puzzled with the development. Shanu Mukherjee, the bank manager, told TOI, “I cannot understand what they actually wanted. Customer data is generally safe in the central server and no vital information is stored in bank computers. They even entered the strong room, but could not enter the locker room where cash chest is kept.”Soon after the news of robbery was circulated, a large crowd of customers gathered at the bank and demanded to check their lockers. However, they were not allowed to do so by police and bank staff. “We have informed the company whose lockers are installed in the bank. Their engineers will inspect the lockers. Once they give us a green signal and police investigations are over, we will allow the customers to access their lockers,” added Mukherjee. However, a majority of account holders were seen panicking despite assurances. Varun Kumar, a customer, told TOI, “We need to see our lockers. Burglars had entered the strong room and may have broken a few lockers. We are the owners or these vaults and have full right to access them but are not being granted permission to do so. At this point, we cannot trust the bankers.”
