Meerut: A heath department analysis of dengue cases in Meerut district in the past two years has revealed that the eastern part of the district is more susceptible to the mosquito-borne disease. Following the analysis, senior health officials have written to the district magistrate emphasizing on the need for better coordination between government departments to check the outbreak of dengue and chikungunya in Meerut. So far, 54 cases of dengue have been reported from the district.According to the analysis based on dengue cases in 2015 and 2016, a copy of which is with TOI, the maximum number of cases in both years has been reported from east Meerut. Some of the most affected areas during this period included Medical College, Jail chungi, Jagriti Vihar, Shastri Nagar, Arya Nagar, Alampur, Sarai Qazi, Sardhana and Hasanpur.Talking about the report, a health department official, who did not wish to be named, said, “The analysis for 2015 and 2016 has been the same for dengue-related cases. The district malaria team under the health department may have regularly carried out fumigation and other containment exercises but it is now quite clear that these are not enough to contain dengue. Issues like potholes on roads, improper disposal of waste and open drains cannot be corrected by the health department alone and the Meerut Municipal Corporation (MMC) needs to step in.”The letter written to the district magistrate by chief medical officer Dr Raj Kumar Chaudhary read, “In year 2015, 362 dengue cases were reported in Meerut district and in 2016, 195 dengue cases and 1,118 chikungunya cases were reported. The district malaria officer is carrying out daily fogging and anti-larval survey in urban and rural parts of Meerut. Health camps in areas where dengue patients have been found are being organized by the health unit of block community health centres and urban primary health centres. Notices are also being issued at public and private properties where mosquito larvae are found. Coordination and active participation in urban and rural Meerut by the concerned authorities for patching road pits, waste management on roads and closure of open drains will help in containment dengue and chikungunya.”Officials said that a copy of the analysis was also attached with he letter to the district magistrate.
