Bijnor: On the occasion of Navratri, district authorities have invoked religious sentiments to prevent open defecation. According to the authorities, it has been observed that despite the erection of toilets at homes, people are still defecating in the open out of habit and hence they are being told that the deities in the temples are becoming impure as the practice leads to flies increasing in number and entering temples. If they want to keep temples free from such impurities, villagers are being told they must avoid going into the open to answer nature’s call.Bijnor district officials said the district may have been declared open defecation-free (ODF), with a toilet installed in each house, but old habits die hard. People still preferred to go out in the open.On Thursday, ‘swachhta kalash yatras’ were taken out in rural areas to make the people aware of the sanitation programme. Chief development officer Indramani Tripathi said, “These yatras will be carried out for nine days in rural areas. It is aimed at making people in these areas aware about cleanliness.”Tripathi added, “We are telling people that temples can remain clean only after we make the entire village clean and open defecation-free. When one defecates in the open, flies sit on human fecal matter, fly to temple and make them impure as well. The insects sit on food items (prasad) and idols. Therefore, defecating in the open must stop. ”Mahesh Pal Singh, a resident of Sahwazpur village said, “This programme is good. All devotees should participate in the swachhta kalash yatra.
