Meerut: A consumer court here has directed a private company, an insurer, to pay the insurance money to a Delhi resident whose car was stolen in 2006 in Meerut.Draupadi Tuteja’s Maruti 800 car, which was insured by Oriental Insurance Company, went missing on October 1, 2006. However, instead of repeated reminders, the company did not pay insurance amount of Rs 50,000 to Tuteja.Now, Meerut consumer court has instructed the company to pay Rs 50,000 with 9% yearly interest from the time of filing of insurance to Tuteja. The court also asked the company to pay Rs 10,000 as physical and mental harassment charges along with Rs 5,000 as legal charges to the consumer.Tuteja had filed the case in February 2011.“My Maruti 800 car was stolen from Lalkurti area on October 1, 2006. I filed an FIR in this regard on October 2 and informed the insurance company. The company then asked me for the car keys, insurance policy and registration papers, which I submitted.But, even two years after having filed the claim, I did not get any money. In 2008, I approached the com pany again to enquire about the claim. I was then told that I should transfer the car on the name of the insurance company, which I did.Even after transferring the car in the company’s name, two more years passed and I did not receive any money until 2010. Then I sent a legal notice to the company and finally filed a case against them,” read the complaint of Tuteja filed in the court.He is a resident of Delhi’ Sheikh Sarai and filed a case in Meerut because the car was stolen in Meerut Cantt’s Lalkurti area.The bench headed by Desh Bhushan Jain, president, consumer forum, and Indu Chaudhary, member, gave a decision in favour of Tuteja.
