Meerut: After weeks of frantic requests to everybody from the PM to the district administration, a young woman who left her job with tech giant Dell to become a farmer was relieved when police on Sunday escorted her injured cow from Meerut to Bareilly for treatment.Jyoti Singh, 24, had been at her wits’ end about how to get specialized treatment for her cow, Moni, which was injured in the leg in September. Fear of cow protection vigilantes had prevented truckers from agreeing to transport the animal to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly. After the story appeared in TOI on Sunday, Meerut senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manzil Saini called up Jyoti and organized a vehicle to shift the cow to Bareilly under police protection.Saini said, "Two police constables will be sent in the vehicle and I have also requested a veterinary doctor from the animal husbandry department to go along."TOI had taken up the issue after repeated tweets by Jyoti to the PM, CM and senior oficials elicited no response.Laer on Sunday two police constables accompanied Moni, Jyoti and her father Ranbir Singh to IVRI in a vehicle provided by UP Police.Speaking to TOI, constable Rampal Singh who was accompanying them said, “The purpose of our going with them is to avoid any untoward incident in the form of attacks by gau rakshaks on the way. With police protection, the possibility is completely ruled out.”Ranbir expressed full confidence that the cow would definitely get a new lease of life. “It would not have been possible without my daughter’s determination. Had she not worked hard to get the cow’s plight highlighted, Moni would not have had a chance at treatment. We are thankful to media and UP Police for helping us out eventually.”Jyoti’s joy knew no bounds. “TOI’s front page story made all the difference. I got a call from the SSP in the morning and she assured me all kinds of assistance in the matter including travel under police protection. Otherwise, I was too tired running around with little result. IVRI Bareilly has the best of facilities and now I am sure Moni will be all right. Now we do not fear cow vigilantes, because we have police protection.”
