Nair Hospital doctor removes 'heaviest' 1.87-kg brain tumour

The hospital said that this is the heaviest brain tumour to be removed successfully in the world. Santlal Pal was admitted to the Department of Neurosurgery of B.Y.L. Nair Hospital with progressive swelling of scalp, heaviness, headaches and diminution of vision in both eyes since a year. During examination, he had a firm scalp swelling measuring 30X30X20 cms. Speaking about the case, Dr Trimurti Nadkarni, Professor, and Head of Neurosurgery at Nair Hospital, said, “Due to pressure of the tumour, the patient lost his vision. Specialised CT angiography was performed to study blood supply of the tumour. The tumour was noted to have invaded into the brain on both sides of the midline through the skull bone. The sample of the tumour is given for testing.” Pal had to undergo a seven-hour long surgery to remove the tumour. According to the doctor, there was a high risk of surgery, but it went successfully. Pal required transfusion of 11 units of blood and will be on ventilator support for three days. According to Dr Nadkarni, they are hopeful of getting his vision back. “There is 50-50 chance of him getting his vision back. Such large tumors are rare and are a surgical challenge. There is heavy blood loss. He is recovering well and is kept on a diet. Chance of a tumour developing again can be said only after getting his medical report.” Before coming to Nair Hospital, he was undergoing treatment in UP.
