more-in Mumbai: The family of an eight-year-old girl, declared brain dead at Lilavati Hospital in Bandra, donated her organs on Tuesday. The organs have given a new lease of life to four critically ill patients, including three children. The girl, a resident of south Mumbai, had been admitted on February 27 due to a brain aneurysm. Doctors declared her brain dead on Monday. While her heart was given to a 10-year-old girl admitted in Fortis Hospital, the liver went to a 32-year-old man in Jaslok Hospital. One kidney was transplanted to a 16-year-old girl, and the second to a five- year-old boy, both suffering from end-stage kidney disease. The family also gave consent for retrieval of her cornea, which were sent to Roshni Eye Bank. The 16-year-old kidney recipient was admitted to hospital on Monday, shortly after appearing for her Class X examination, for the transplant. “Paediatric organ transplants have a long wait period. Initially, the recipient’s parents were in two minds as she would have to miss her board exams, but in the end, they decided to go ahead with the transplant,” Pramod Shinge, organ transplant coordinator, Lilavati Hospital, said. The donor’s family knew about organ donation and required little counselling, he added. This year, 12 cadaver organ donations have been carried out, from which 18 kidneys, 11 livers, five hearts and one lung were retrieved.
