The fire broke out around 1.25 p.m. at Aashay Hall in Maharashtra Nagar compound, and was declared a Level III emergency at 1.38 p.m., officials said. The Fire Brigade rushed eight fire tenders and eight jumbo tankers to the spot. “The blaze broke out in the hall and spread to a garments workshop on its mezzanine floor, where combustible goods like clothes, wood, and sewing machines were stocked. This contributed to the intensity of fire,” a fire officer said. The fire was brought under control by 4.11 p.m. and was completely doused at 5.50 p.m. Officials said three women, who were in the workshop at the time of the fire, sustained superficial injuries to their legs while they were being evacuated. They were treated at Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. The entire area was covered in smoke, and local residents complained of eyes burning and difficulty in breathing for some time. Just a couple of hours later, at 3 p.m., another fire broke out at Deonar dumping ground located 2 km away. Two fire tenders and one water tanker were deployed and the blaze was doused by 4.30 p.m. Although the fire was not severe in intensity, the smoke engulfed Deonar, Mankhurd and parts of Govandi and Kurla.
