Six more Bangladeshis held in Bhiwandi

“We are interrogating them to verify whether there are more illegal immigrants from Bangladesh in Bhiwandi or neighbouring areas. On Thursday, the Mumbai unit arrested eight more immigrants from Kandivali in northern Mumbai. No travel documents or any other valid paperwork was found on them, and they were arrested,” an ATS officer said. The six hail from different districts like Chhattagram, Navkhali and Faridpur, and were working as plumbers or daily wage labourers in Bhiwandi, the officer said. The arrests were made by the Thane unit of the ATS following a tip off. “Acting on the information received, we tracked the six accused to a locality in Bhiwandi and picked them up for questioning, after which they confessed to being Bangladeshi nationals. No travel documents or any other valid paperwork was found on them, and they were arrested,” an ATS officer said. The six hail from different districts like Chhattagram, Navkhali and Faridpur, and were working as plumbers or daily wage labourers in Bhiwandi, the officer said. All were produced in court on Saturday and remanded in ATS custody till March 28. “We are interrogating them to verify whether there are more illegal immigrants from Bangladesh in Bhiwandi or neighbouring areas. We will also be finding out how they entered the country and how long they have been living here,” the officer said, adding that their possible links to terrorist outfits like the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh or the Ansarullah Bangla Team, an Al Qaeda affiliate, are also being investigated. On March 13 the Mumbai unit of the ATS arrested five alleged illegal immigrants from Jui Gaon in Raigad district, while on March 17, the Pune unit arrested three illegal immigrants alleged to be members of the ABT. On Thursday, the Mumbai unit arrested eight more immigrants from Kandivali in northern Mumbai.
