Maharashtra: 639 farmers committed suicide in three months

While 639 farmers have committed suicide in 3 months between March 1 and May 31 this year, the state government said that of the 639 cases, 122 suicides do not fall under farmers' suicide criterion and were declared ineligible for compensation. The opposition had asked about the number of farmers that committed suicide in the last three months and the status of compensation provided to the family of the deceased. He informed that Government would consider these farmers' as special case for providing loan waiver benefits. While 329 cases are pending for further investigation, the government has paid compensation in only 174 cases. Minister for rehabilitation Chandrakant Patil in his written reply has informed that Bothbodan village in Yavatmal has witnessed 23 farmer suicides.

Replying to a question asked by the Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Dhananjay Munde and other NCP members including Hemant Takale, Sunil Tatkare, Amarsinh Pandit, Kiran Pavaskar, Narendra Patil, Jaidev Gaikwad, Rahul Narvekar, Vikram Kale, Vidya Chavan, Satish Chavan, Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation Chandrakant Patil said that out of 639 suicides, 188 cases were eligible for compensation based on the government's criteria of crop failure, debts and their failure to repay loans. The criterion has been fixed by district-level committee. The opposition had asked about the number of farmers that committed suicide in the last three months and the status of compensation provided to the family of the deceased. Minister for rehabilitation Chandrakant Patil in his written reply has informed that Bothbodan village in Yavatmal has witnessed 23 farmer suicides. While Patil gave this reply in the legislative council, Minister for Cooperation Subhash Deshmukh on Friday informed the State Assembly that there are 2.40 lakh farmers who can't avail loan waiver for the want of Aadhaar card. He informed that Government would consider these farmers' as special case for providing loan waiver benefits.
