more-in Mumbai: Services on the Western Line were affected for over an hour on Sunday after a rumour that the Khar subway was on the verge of collapse. All services were stopped at 4.50 p.m. by the Western Railway (WR), and its engineers inspected the subway connecting Khar and Santacruz before declaring it safe. A fire brigade official said according to a call received at 4.40 p.m. one of the subway’s pillars was about to collapse, and the BMC Disaster Management control room was alerted. Mahesh Narvekar, chief officer, Disaster Management unit, said they informed WR of the same. The fire brigade deployed one fire engine as a precautionary measure. Sanjay Mishra, Divisional Railway Manager (Mumbai), WR, said, “We received a call from the BMC around 4.50 p.m., and halted services on all tracks. A team was sent to inspect the structure.” The subway was declared safe around 5.40 p.m. During this period, several trains were stopped mid-section, affecting services. To ensure other sections were not affected, services towards Virar and Borivali from Churchgate were temporarily short-terminated at Bandra and reversed. Similarly, services to Churchgate from Virar and Borivali were short-terminated at Andheri and reversed. Harbour Line services were the first to start at 5.45 p.m., followed by the fast line at 5.50 p.m. and the slow line at 5.52 p.m. A speed restriction of 30 km per hour was imposed on the first few trains, which was withdrawn at 6 p.m.
