Parents of medical aspirants in the states have welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court (SC) to upheld the judgement of the High Court on medical admissions in the state. Recently the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition filed against the State's rule demanding state domicile and 10th and 12th education from the state to allow entry for medical admission from the state quota. The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) of Maharashtra came out with a rule this year that a candidate should complete his 10th and 12th standard from the state of Maharashtra and he must possess domicile certificate of Maharashtra if need admission in medical courses from state quota. The said rule was challenged in the High Court, but the High Court dismissed the petitions on 26 July and upheld the rule. Today SC order has gladdened many parents and students from state seeking admission in medical education. Dr. Pravin Shingare, Director, DMER, said, "The state won the case in SC like it did in the Bombay High Court. Hence, we have withdrawn admissions of 30 students who were not fit in the rule and were given admission. Till date 92% admissions have been done in state quota (85% seats). Only 8% seats are vacant and will be filled in third round of admission that will take place on 21 August." Sudha Shenoy, parent of medical aspirant, representing parents of medical aspirants from state, said, "After the landmark judgement at HC on the state domicile matter, it was challenged in Supreme Court. Since SC upheld the judgement of the HC, now this is a full and final victory for the state students. This will benefit all the future batches and leave no ambiguity on this matter anymore." Most of the parents of medical aspirants came together and made a contribution to fight the case in Bombay High court as well as in Supreme Court in support of state's DMER's rule. They raised funds upto 10 lakhs. Every parent contributed as per their capacity from Rs 5000 up to Rs 15000 to aid the legal intervention. WHAT THE AUTHORITIES DEMAND
